[47] Training Guidelines (Friday, May 23, 2024) - MuYeDoBoTongJi
[ISIBSABANMUYE Daily Training Guidelines] English 047 – MuYeDoBoTongJi (Friday, May 23, 2024)
MuYeDoBoTongJi, also known as ¹«¿¹µµº¸ÅëÁö in Korean, is a comprehensive illustrated manual of martial arts. It was commissioned in 1790 by King JeonJo. The manual expanded on the eighteen weapons systems identified in the MuYeSinBo of 1759. It was written by IDeogMu, BagJeGa, and BaegDongSu, and published in four volumes.
The manual is widely regarded as a resource for understanding the nature of Korean military science in the 18th century. It preserved the methods and practices of the earlier work while adding equestrian training. The 24 martial arts of MuYeDoBoTongJi were basically divided into three types: stabbing, cutting, and hitting.
The value of martial arts of MuYeDoBoTongJi is highly evaluated because it has systematically put together the martial arts of three countries like Korea, China, and Japan of the 18th century, suitable for the actual status of JoSeon Dynasty, in the new perspective. The value of MuYeDoBoTongJi as a Memory of the World is the martial arts book emphasizing the practicality, so that everyone including officers and soldiers could easily learn.
It's worth noting that the MuYeDoBoTongJi is the only surviving classical text on the Korean arts of war. It clearly shows the influence of neighboring Japanese and Chinese armies. |
